Authorities in Kerala have imposed strict restrictions on Sabarimala pilgrimage activities in response to the ongoing heavy rainfall in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts. Pilgrims are prohibited from accessing rivers, bathing ghats, and the forest route via Sathram to the Sabarimala shrine. The decision, announced by the district collectors of Pathanamthitta and Idukki, aims to safeguard devotees from potential risks caused by adverse weather conditions.
Pathanamthitta District Collector S Prem Krishna confirmed that the ban on river and ghat access will remain in effect until the withdrawal of the heavy rainfall alert. The directive cited increased risks of flooding, landslides, and waterlogging in low-lying regions due to relentless precipitation.
In the mountainous and forested areas, the intense rain has raised the likelihood of flash floods, landslides, and mudslides, necessitating extreme caution from both residents and visitors. Additionally, activities involving reservoirs, such as river crossings or bathing, have been strictly prohibited to prevent accidents.
Idukki District Collector V Vigneshwari reinforced the travel ban along the Mukkuzhy-Sathram forest path, stating it would remain in place until weather conditions improve. Law enforcement and forest officials have been directed to implement necessary measures to enforce these restrictions effectively.
These steps underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Sabarimala pilgrims during the challenging monsoon season.
