Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has become the largest political donor in the United States, contributing at least $270 million to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, according to recent federal filings. Musk, a staunch supporter of Trump, has been a significant financial backer, investing in campaign efforts such as door-knocking operations and even speaking at Trump rallies. His financial involvement has eclipsed the contributions of other high-profile donors like Tim Mellon, who previously led Trump’s donations with nearly $200 million.
Musk’s donations include a massive $238 million to America PAC, a political action committee he founded specifically to support Trump’s re-election, along with an additional $20 million to the RBG PAC, a group aimed at improving Trump’s image on contentious issues like abortion. This makes Musk’s total contributions the highest from any single donor since 2010, according to data from nonprofit organization OpenSecrets.
Beyond his financial support, Musk has been a close ally of Trump, even inviting the president-elect to witness a rocket launch at his SpaceX facility in Texas. In return, Trump has appointed Musk to a key advisory role in his administration, naming him the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, a position tasked with overseeing major cuts to federal spending. However, Musk’s business dealings with the U.S. and foreign governments have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Additionally, several of Musk’s associates, including investor David Sacks and astronaut Jared Isaacman, have been nominated for prominent roles in the upcoming administration.
