Russia Moves to Block WhatsApp Amid Messaging App Restrictions

Russia has attempted to fully block WhatsApp as part of a broader crackdown on messaging platforms, the company said. The move is seen as an effort to shift millions of users in the country toward state-backed communication apps, as authorities tighten control over digital services.

The development follows increased restrictions on Telegram, with regulators citing security concerns. Russia’s communications watchdog has repeatedly warned WhatsApp to comply with local laws, and reports suggest the platform could face a permanent ban in 2026.

Meta, which owns WhatsApp, said blocking the app would limit access to private and secure communication for more than 100 million users in Russia. The country has already banned Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram since 2022 after designating the company an extremist organisation.
