Three days after the United States launched strikes on Iran, President Donald Trump has offered shifting explanations about the objectives of the military operation, leaving uncertainty about Washington’s long term strategy.
Senior administration officials initially stated that the primary aim was to dismantle Iran’s nuclear programme. However, subsequent comments from the president through social media posts and brief media interactions suggested a broader agenda, including weakening Iran’s missile capabilities and limiting its regional influence.
Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump said the US is targeting Iran’s ballistic missile systems, naval assets, nuclear development capacity and its support for proxy groups across the Middle East. He argued that the operation is designed to protect the United States and its allies from future attacks.
Trump warned that an Iran equipped with long range missiles and nuclear weapons would pose a serious threat not only to the Middle East but also to American citizens. He maintained that the military action is intended to neutralise that danger.
Despite outlining these goals, the president did not clarify what political outcome Washington expects in Tehran once the operation concludes. He also did not explain how the campaign would ensure that Iran no longer presents a threat in the future.
Earlier remarks had fuelled speculation about possible regime change. Shortly after the initial strikes, Trump publicly encouraged Iranians to reclaim their government, a statement widely interpreted as a signal against the leadership of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Analysts say the evolving messaging reflects a lack of clear public consensus within the administration about the ultimate endgame, even as military operations continue.
