Abu Dhabi Unveils Sea Bridges Linking Al Reem Island to E12 Highway

Abu Dhabi: Two new sea bridges have been opened, directly linking Al Reem Island to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Highway (E12), bringing significant relief to traffic in the capital. The Department of Municipalities and Transport announced the launch of the project, which is expected to benefit both residents and expatriates.

Built at a cost of Dh450 million, the bridges are designed to reduce travel time by up to 15 minutes during peak hours, which is nearly a 60 percent improvement. The route can handle up to 7,200 vehicles per hour, helping ease congestion across key areas.

The new connection improves access between Al Reem Island and Saadiyat Island, while also providing smoother connectivity to the Dubai highway. It is expected to reduce pressure on busy roads such as Hamdan Bin Mohammed Street and Mina Road.

The bridge spans approximately 1.5 km and has been constructed using advanced cast in situ box girder technology. It is supported by 12 V-shaped piers, allowing uninterrupted marine movement beneath.

In addition to the bridges, the project includes a 2 km elevated road, dedicated paths for pedestrians and cyclists, and landscaped surroundings. A special freight U-turn bridge has also been added to improve cargo movement between Zayed Port and Saadiyat Island.

Officials noted that the project took around 5 million working hours to complete and reflects Abu Dhabi’s focus on sustainable and modern infrastructure development.
