Iran has once again restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz, reversing its earlier decision to reopen the key shipping route. Officials said the move comes in response to the United States maintaining its blockade on Iranian ports.
Iranian military authorities stated that the strait is now under strict control, warning that restrictions will remain unless full freedom of navigation for Iranian vessels is guaranteed. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also signaled that any violation of its position would prompt a response.
According to UK Maritime Trade Operations, an incident was reported in which a tanker was fired upon by Iranian gunboats while attempting to pass through the strait. The vessel and its crew were reported safe, though investigations are ongoing.
The escalation follows comments by US President Donald Trump that the blockade would remain in place until a broader agreement with Iran is reached. A temporary ceasefire, brokered with support from Pakistan, is also under uncertainty.
Despite rising tensions, diplomatic efforts continue, with further talks expected as global concerns grow over the impact on energy supply. The Strait of Hormuz, which carries around 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas, remains a critical focal point in the ongoing crisis.
