Dubai forum warns of sleeper cell threats, urges stronger vigilance across Gulf

Security concerns in the Gulf region have intensified after experts at a forum hosted by the Dubai Press Club warned about the growing risk of “sleeper cells” operating within the region.

Participants highlighted that such covert networks could destabilise internal security and fuel unrest if not addressed decisively. Bahraini journalist Souzan Al Shar said these groups have long attempted to weaken regional stability, calling for unified action among Gulf nations to counter the threat.

Kuwaiti writer Mohammed Al Mulla described the situation as a dual challenge, involving both internal threats and external pressures. He stressed the importance of strengthening joint defence mechanisms, including the proposed “Joint Gulf Shield,” to enhance regional security.

Experts also underlined the critical role of media in countering misinformation and extremist narratives. They said responsible journalism can act as a protective layer by promoting awareness, unity, and national identity.

The forum further noted that foreign actors may attempt to influence youth through misleading content, urging stronger media strategies to safeguard social cohesion and stability across Gulf countries.
