Dubai launches major road upgrades to ease traffic congestion across key areas

Roads and Transport Authority has announced a major infrastructure upgrade to tackle traffic congestion in Dubai. The project focuses on improving key corridors including Umm Suqeim, Al Wasl, and Al Safa streets through the construction of bridges, tunnels, and enhanced road networks.

The development will span approximately 11 kilometres and is designed to improve traffic flow while also enhancing urban aesthetics. Plans include pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, and public spaces such as urban plazas.

According to Mattar Al Tayer, the upgraded routes will significantly boost road capacity. Umm Suqeim Street alone is expected to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour, while Al Wasl and Al Safa streets will accommodate around 12,000 vehicles per hour.

Key upgrades include the redevelopment of six major intersections on Umm Suqeim Street with over 4 kilometres of bridges and tunnels, reducing travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to just six minutes. Al Wasl Road will see seven intersections improved and multiple tunnels constructed, cutting travel time by half.

On Al Safa Street, new bridges and tunnels will reduce travel time from 12 minutes to three minutes, while additional upgrades on Jumeirah Street aim to ease congestion at busy junctions.

The project is expected to benefit over two million residents in areas such as Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Barsha, and Al Quoz, strengthening Dubai’s infrastructure and supporting its position as a global investment hub.
