Russian mercenaries to withdraw from Kidal after major clashes in Mali

Mali is witnessing escalating conflict as Russian mercenaries supporting the national army have agreed to withdraw from the northern city of Kidal following intense clashes with separatist forces.

The Azawad Liberation Front claimed it now controls the city after coordinated attacks across multiple regions, including near the capital Bamako. The group, which seeks an independent Tuareg state in northern Mali, said it had reached an agreement to ensure the safe exit of Russian fighters.

Violence erupted across several key locations, including Kati, Gao, Sevare, and Mopti, in what analysts describe as one of the largest coordinated assaults in recent years. Reports also indicate the involvement of jihadist groups such as Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin.

Amid the unrest, Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was reportedly killed in an attack near Bamako, though officials have not formally confirmed his death.

Authorities have tightened security nationwide, imposing curfews and increasing patrols as fighting continues in several areas. The situation remains volatile, with concerns rising over further instability in the region.
