Loss of appetite in summer often normal, but can signal health risks

A drop in appetite during peak summer is a common experience, but health experts say it can sometimes indicate underlying medical concerns if it persists.

Doctors explain that rising temperatures naturally affect the body’s hunger signals. As the body works harder to regulate heat through sweating and cooling mechanisms, digestion takes a secondary role, leading to reduced appetite. Lower physical activity during extreme heat also decreases energy demand, further suppressing hunger.

Medical experts note that people tend to prefer lighter, water-rich foods such as fruits, curd, and salads during summer. These foods help maintain hydration and are easier to digest, making them more suitable in hot conditions. Mild dehydration can also play a role, as the body may confuse thirst with fullness.

However, experts warn that appetite loss should not be ignored if it becomes prolonged or is accompanied by other symptoms. Signs such as fatigue, dizziness, nausea, fever, or reduced urine output may indicate dehydration, heat exhaustion, or infection.

“If appetite loss continues for more than five to seven days or is associated with weakness, it requires medical evaluation,” doctors said, adding that children, elderly individuals, and those with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable.

Health professionals recommend small, frequent meals instead of heavy portions, along with adequate hydration through water, coconut water, and other fluids. Avoiding oily, spicy foods and maintaining a cool eating environment can also help improve appetite.

Experts emphasise that while a temporary dip in hunger is part of the body’s natural adaptation to heat, persistent changes should be treated as an important health signal.
