Donald Trump to review Iran peace plan but doubts breakthrough as tensions persist

Donald Trump said he will review a new peace proposal submitted by Iran but expressed strong doubts about its chances of acceptance, citing unresolved concerns.

Speaking in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said he could not imagine approving the proposal, adding that Iran had not faced sufficient consequences for its actions over the past decades. He also warned that military action remains a possibility if tensions escalate.

Iranian news agencies Tasnim and Fars reported that Tehran had submitted a 14 point proposal to mediator Pakistan. The plan reportedly includes ending the conflict across all fronts and introducing a new framework for managing the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The conflict, which began in late February involving the United States and Israel, has been on hold since April 8 following an unsuccessful round of talks in Pakistan.

A senior Iranian military official, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, warned that renewed fighting with the United States is likely, accusing Washington of failing to honour commitments.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran is prepared for both diplomacy and confrontation, placing responsibility on Washington to decide the next course.

Meanwhile, US envoy Steve Witkoff has reportedly pushed for Iran’s nuclear programme to return to negotiations, according to Axios.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations criticised the United States, calling its stance on nuclear issues “hypocritical” while pointing to its own nuclear arsenal.
