Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launches Dubai Metro Blue Line tunnelling phase

Dubai has marked a major milestone in its public transport expansion as Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurated the tunnelling phase of the Dubai Metro Blue Line. The project is scheduled for completion on September 9, 2029, with a total investment of AED 20.5 billion.

The Blue Line will span approximately 30 kilometres, including both elevated and underground sections, and feature 14 stations across two main routes. It is designed to integrate with the existing Dubai Metro Red Line and Dubai Metro Green Line, improving connectivity across key areas of the city.

The new line will also provide direct access between Dubai International Airport and several major districts, reducing travel time to between 10 and 25 minutes. Authorities expect the project to cut traffic congestion by around 20 percent along its routes.

Key urban hubs such as Dubai Silicon Oasis and Dubai Academic City will benefit from enhanced connectivity, supporting growing populations and future development.

A standout feature of the project is the Emaar Properties station, set to become the world’s highest metro station. It has been designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, known for delivering iconic global landmarks.

Alongside the Blue Line, Dubai is advancing plans for the Dubai Metro Gold Line, a fully underground network expected to further ease congestion and support long-term urban growth. The Gold Line is projected to serve hundreds of thousands of passengers daily and integrate with Etihad Rail.

These developments form part of Dubai’s broader strategy to strengthen infrastructure, improve mobility, and reinforce its position as a global hub for smart and sustainable urban development.
