Viral ‘Egg Coffee’ trend raises health concerns despite unique taste

The Vietnamese style “Egg Coffee” that has been trending across social media platforms is attracting attention for its creamy texture and unusual flavour combination, but health experts warn that the drink may come with several risks if consumed regularly.

Egg Coffee is typically prepared by blending egg yolks with sugar or honey and condensed milk before pouring the mixture over strong coffee. The result is a rich and frothy beverage that many online users describe as smooth and dessert like.

Despite its growing popularity, experts caution that the use of raw or undercooked eggs can pose serious health concerns. One of the biggest risks is Salmonella infection, a type of bacterial contamination that may cause fever, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps. The risk is considered higher for children, pregnant women, elderly people and those with weak immune systems.

Another concern is the drink’s high calorie content. The addition of condensed milk, sugar and egg yolks can significantly increase calorie intake, potentially contributing to weight gain and elevated blood sugar levels when consumed frequently.

Health professionals also warn about cholesterol levels, as egg yolks naturally contain high amounts of cholesterol. Regular intake may not be suitable for people dealing with heart disease, diabetes or other lifestyle related conditions.

Some individuals may also experience digestive discomfort or acidity, especially when combining coffee with fatty ingredients like egg yolk and condensed milk. Raw eggs may also be difficult for certain people to digest.

Experts advise those interested in trying the drink to use pasteurised eggs and reduce added sugar wherever possible. They recommend consuming Egg Coffee occasionally rather than making it a regular dietary habit.

While the viral drink continues to gain popularity online, doctors stress that taste and trends should not outweigh food safety and overall health considerations.
