Trump-Backed Candidate Wins Colombia Presidential Election

Bogotá: Right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella has declared victory in Colombia’s presidential election after an initial vote count showed him narrowly ahead of left-wing rival Iván Cepeda.

With more than 99 percent of ballots counted, de la Espriella secured nearly 49.7 percent of the vote, compared to 48.7 percent for Cepeda. The result, however, remains subject to official verification, and Cepeda has not yet conceded defeat, stating that the preliminary count is not legally binding until the final canvass is completed.

Backed by Donald Trump, de la Espriella campaigned on promises to strengthen security, combat drug trafficking and take tougher action against armed groups operating within the country. Addressing supporters after the vote, he pledged to govern for all Colombians and reaffirmed his commitment to the nation’s constitution.

The closely contested election highlighted deep political divisions across Colombia. While supporters celebrated in the coastal city of Barranquilla, concerns were raised by opposition supporters over the narrow margin of victory. Reports also emerged of clashes between protesters and police in the city of Cali following the announcement of the preliminary results.

Outgoing President Gustavo Petro called for further scrutiny of the voting process and demanded an audit of election software, although no evidence of irregularities has been officially presented.

The final certified results are expected following the completion of the electoral verification process.
