Abu Dhabi: The UAE has reached a major milestone in its transport sector as the first Etihad Rail passenger train successfully completed its inaugural journey from Fujairah to Abu Dhabi, marking the beginning of the country’s national passenger rail network.
The train departed Al Hilal City Station in Fujairah at 5:34 am on June 30 and arrived at Mohamed bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi at 7:00 am, approximately 45 minutes ahead of schedule.
The historic journey was celebrated at both stations with traditional Emirati performances and special events, as hundreds of passengers took part in the first trip and welcomed the arrival of the country’s long-awaited passenger rail service.
Commercial passenger operations are scheduled to begin on September 30, initially connecting Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al Dhaid and Fujairah. The network will expand to Al Dhafra in December 2026, followed by Sharjah in March 2027.
The journey between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes, reducing travel time by about an hour compared with driving. The trains can operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h.
As part of the launch promotion, Etihad Rail is offering a 50 percent introductory discount on the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route. Ticket prices start from AED 55 for Comfort Class and AED 120 for Premium Class.
The passenger fleet consists of 13 trains, each capable of carrying up to 400 passengers. Once commercial services begin, tickets can be booked through the Etihad Rail mobile app and the company’s official website.
The railway network is expected to improve connectivity between emirates, support economic growth and provide residents and visitors with a faster, more sustainable travel option.
