Diabetes? A 10-Minute Walk After Meals May Help Control Blood Sugar

A 10 to 12-minute walk after meals could be a simple yet effective habit for people living with diabetes or insulin resistance, helping improve blood sugar control while supporting digestion and overall metabolic health.

Health experts say that after eating, the body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, causing blood sugar levels to rise. Light walking after meals allows muscles to use glucose for energy more efficiently, helping reduce sharp spikes in blood sugar and lowering the amount of insulin the body needs to release.

Research published in Scientific Reports has also shown that light walking after meals can improve post-meal blood glucose levels, particularly among people with diabetes and insulin resistance.

In addition to supporting blood sugar management, experts say a short walk may also promote better digestion by stimulating the digestive system and helping food move through the stomach and intestines more efficiently.

Walking after eating may also help reduce bloating and gas, especially after heavy meals, while lowering the risk of acid reflux by preventing stomach acid from moving back into the oesophagus.

Regular post-meal walking may further improve insulin sensitivity, enabling the body to use insulin more effectively over time.

Experts recommend walking for 10 to 12 minutes at a slow-to-brisk pace after lunch, dinner or the largest meal of the day.

They also stress that exercise should be combined with a balanced diet rich in whole grains, pulses, green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds to support long-term blood sugar management.

People with diabetes should consult their healthcare provider before making significant changes to their diet or exercise routine, especially if they are taking blood sugar-lowering medications.
