Tesla is recalling around 2.98 million electric vehicles in China over concerns related to their electronic door handles, according to the country’s State Administration for Market Regulation.
The recall covers both China-made and imported Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S vehicles. It is reportedly the largest vehicle recall in China this year and forms part of a wider recall involving more than four million vehicles from Tesla and other Chinese automakers, largely linked to door-handle safety concerns.
Chinese authorities have increased scrutiny of flush or hidden electronic door handles following incidents in which malfunctioning systems reportedly made it difficult for occupants to exit vehicles after accidents.
The recall comes months after Chinese authorities announced plans to prohibit certain hidden car door-handle designs from next year. The move reflects growing concerns over ensuring that vehicle occupants can safely exit cars when electronic door systems fail.
