Around 28,739 people in Kuwait are living with Type 1 diabetes, Kuwait Diabetes Association Chairman Dr. Waleed Al-Dahi said, highlighting the growing role of advanced technology in managing the condition.
Al-Dahi made the remarks during a scientific event that discussed the latest developments in diabetes care. He stressed the need to make greater use of modern technologies to improve diabetes management and reduce the daily burden on patients.
He said smart insulin pumps are bringing significant changes to diabetes care by monitoring blood glucose levels and helping adjust insulin delivery according to the body’s requirements.
Modern systems such as the Omnipod 5 can work alongside continuous glucose monitoring technology to provide information on glucose levels and adjust insulin delivery accordingly. Al-Dahi said such systems can help patients manage fluctuations in blood sugar levels, including episodes of low and high glucose.
For people who traditionally require insulin injections four or five times a day, insulin pump systems can reduce the need for repeated injections and make daily diabetes management more convenient.
Some wearable insulin pumps can be replaced every three days, further reducing the frequency of intervention required from patients. The systems can also offer greater flexibility in managing insulin delivery as part of everyday life.
Al-Dahi particularly highlighted the potential benefits for children and young people living with Type 1 diabetes. He said newer technologies could help reduce the treatment burden and support a better quality of life for younger patients and their families.
Modern insulin pump systems are available in Kuwait for patients, including children and adolescents, he added.
The growing use of glucose-monitoring and insulin-delivery technologies reflects the shift toward more automated approaches to Type 1 diabetes management, while patients continue to require medical supervision and individualized care.
