Mazda turns to Changan to accelerate its EV strategy

Mazda is increasingly relying on its Chinese joint venture partner Changan as it works to accelerate its electrification strategy and expand its zero-emission vehicle lineup.

The Japanese automaker has already introduced the Mazda 6e sedan and CX-6e crossover in international markets and is reportedly evaluating additional models that could be produced at its Nanjing facility. The approach could provide Mazda with a faster route to meeting increasingly stringent emissions requirements while reducing the time and investment needed for independent EV development.

The strategy marks a shift in Mazda’s approach to electric vehicles. Rather than immediately developing a completely new battery-electric platform in-house, the company is making greater use of technologies and vehicle architectures developed through its partnership with Changan.

Mazda executives have maintained that current hybrid systems do not fully deliver the driving experience expected by the brand’s customers. At the same time, the company has taken a cautious approach to the transition toward fully electric vehicles, allowing it to evaluate market demand and technology before committing to large-scale proprietary EV development.

Using Changan’s battery technology and vehicle architectures could allow Mazda to introduce new electric models more quickly while focusing its own engineering resources on areas that distinguish its vehicles. The company’s European engineering team continues to work on suspension tuning and chassis development to retain Mazda’s established driving characteristics.

The strategy also reflects the growing cost and complexity of developing modern electric vehicles. Mazda’s earlier electric model faced challenges including limited driving range, reinforcing the need for a different approach as competition in the EV market intensifies.

China’s extensive electric-vehicle supply chain offers Mazda access to established battery and component technologies while potentially reducing development costs and shortening product timelines. The arrangement could give the automaker additional time to develop its own dedicated electric architecture, which is expected around 2029.

Under the partnership, Changan is positioned to provide key EV technologies and battery architectures, while Mazda can concentrate its resources on vehicle design, chassis engineering and driving dynamics.

The approach allows Mazda to expand its electric portfolio without abandoning the engineering characteristics that have long been central to the brand, while using its partnership with Changan to navigate the rapidly changing global EV market.
