Kuwait’s used-car trade expands as auctions and online sales grow

Kuwait’s used-car market is projected to grow from an estimated $1.65 billion in 2025 to $3.94 billion by 2031, driven by rising vehicle supplies, expanding dealership networks, auctions and digital sales platforms. According to Mordor Intelligence, the market is expected to reach $1.91 billion in 2026, representing a compound annual growth rate of 15.62 percent between 2026 and 2031.

Data from Kuwait’s Central Statistical Bureau show that passenger vehicle imports reached KD1.546 billion in 2025, up KD212.09 million, or 15.9 percent, from KD1.334 billion in 2024. Supply is also increasing as consumers upgrade their vehicles and rental companies, engineering firms and oil-sector businesses return cars to the resale market. Shuwaikh remains a major used-car trading and auction hub, while Farwaniya and Jahra also host numerous showrooms and vehicle yards.

Vehicles priced between $10,000 and $14,999 accounted for 29.10 percent of the market in 2025, while cars aged three to five years represented the largest age category, at 33.95 percent. Nearly new vehicles aged up to two years are also gaining popularity, with the segment projected to grow by 13.15 percent annually. Although traditional sales channels accounted for 60.55 percent of the market in 2025, electronic channels are forecast to expand at an annual rate of 18.25 percent through 2031 as buyers increasingly compare prices, specifications and vehicle histories online.

Sedans held the largest share by vehicle type, accounting for 37.8 percent of the market in 2025, while SUVs are projected to record annual growth of 17.1 percent through 2031. Petrol-powered cars represented 85.1 percent of the market, but electric vehicles are forecast to grow by 20.95 percent annually between 2026 and 2031. The report also highlights a significant role for unregulated sellers, who accounted for 71.55 percent of market revenue in 2025, while the regulated segment is projected to grow by 8.75 percent annually. As competition intensifies, vehicle inspections, documented maintenance histories, warranties and after-sales support are expected to become increasingly important to buyers.
