Kuwait Installs 35 Marine Moorings to Protect Kubbar Island Reefs

Kuwait’s Al-Mabarah Environmental Voluntary Foundation has prepared 35 marine moorings around Kubbar Island to protect coral reefs, prevent damage from boat anchors and preserve the island’s marine biodiversity.

Waleed Al-Shatti, the foundation’s marine operations officer, said the initiative forms part of a wider project to install and maintain environmentally friendly moorings around Kuwait’s southern islands and important coral reef sites. The designated docking points allow boat and yacht owners to secure their vessels without dropping traditional anchors that can break or damage fragile coral formations. The system also helps reduce the risk of fishing nets, debris and other objects harming sensitive marine habitats while guiding vessels away from shallow waters and underwater hazards.

Al-Shatti said the project requires year-round monitoring and maintenance to ensure the moorings remain safe and effective under changing marine and weather conditions. Launched in 1997, the initiative has expanded over the years, with 130 moorings now installed at marine locations with significant coral reef concentrations. The foundation has also documented its experience through documentaries, photographs and informational materials, while undertaking operations to rehabilitate marine landing sites.

Located around 30 kilometres off the coast of Al-Zour, Kubbar Island covers approximately 140,000 square metres and is known for its sandy beaches, clear waters and surrounding coral reefs. The island also provides a habitat for rare migratory birds. Al-Shatti said activities that damage or disturb its natural environment are prohibited. Conservation efforts have included removing fishing nets trapped in coral reefs, recovering sunken boats and yachts, clearing waste and installing designated moorings.

The foundation praised the support of the General Directorate of Coast Guard, the Environment Public Authority and the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries Resources in enforcing environmental protection and maritime safety regulations. It also commended boaters and other sea users who follow conservation measures. The initiative aims to reduce preventable damage to coral formations and preserve Kuwait’s marine ecosystems for future generations.
