Abu Dhabi caps overtime pay at Dh4,000 for government employees

Authorities in Abu Dhabi have introduced new regulations limiting overtime benefits for government employees. Under the updated guidelines issued by the Abu Dhabi Government Enablement Department, monthly overtime allowances are capped at either 50 percent of the basic salary or a maximum of Dh4,000.

The rules also set clear limits on working hours, stating that employees cannot exceed four hours of overtime per day or 80 hours per month. The policy is already in effect.

Employees may receive overtime compensation either as additional pay or as compensatory leave, calculated as one day off for every eight hours of extra work. However, the benefits apply only to staff below supervisory positions.

The guidelines require that overtime work must be pre-approved in writing by a supervisor and should only be assigned for tasks outside regular responsibilities. Authorities also clarified that extra time spent correcting personal work errors will not be counted as overtime.

Officials said the move aims to regulate workload, ensure fairness, and improve efficiency within government departments.
