Washington: Marco Rubio has reassured Gulf allies that the United States will continue to protect their security interests as negotiations with Iran move into a new phase, with technical talks expected in Switzerland on June 29 or 30.
Rubio, who recently visited Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, thanked the three countries for their support during the recent conflict and ceasefire efforts. He stressed that Washington would “never undermine” its Gulf partners while pursuing a diplomatic agreement with Tehran.
The US secretary of state also reiterated that discussions on a ceasefire in Lebanon remain separate from the broader negotiations with Iran. He added that the activities of Iran-backed groups across the region remain a key security concern for the United States and its allies.
Rubio further emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and free for international shipping, rejecting any proposal to impose transit charges. He said the international community would oppose any attempt to levy fees on vessels using the strategic waterway.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration confirmed that technical negotiations with Iran will continue in the coming days, with Iran’s nuclear programme remaining the most significant issue in efforts to secure a lasting agreement. US officials said any final deal must prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons while addressing the security concerns of regional allies.
