Mexico City: Three people, including a 19-year-old woman, died during celebrations following Mexico’s 2-0 FIFA World Cup victory over Ecuador, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The victims also included a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, who reportedly died from suffocation after massive crowds gathered across the capital to celebrate Mexico’s first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986.
According to the city’s health authority, emergency responders treated three unconscious people at different locations along Paseo de la Reforma before transporting them to hospital. Despite first aid and CPR efforts, all three later died and were identified by their families.
City officials estimated that more than one million people gathered across Mexico City, particularly around the Angel of Independence monument, following the national team’s victory.
Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged government support. She also urged football fans to celebrate responsibly and with consideration for others.
Before the match, Brugada had advised supporters to avoid gathering near the Angel of Independence due to overcrowding concerns.
Mexico’s victory secured a place in the Round of 16, where the team could face England if the European side wins its group-stage match against DR Congo.
Authorities have not announced any further investigation details into the incident.
