India’s Food Safety Authority Targets Energy Drink Advertisements

New Delhi: Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued notices to several leading energy drink brands over alleged misleading advertising claims, questioning whether the products qualify as energy drinks under Indian food regulations.

According to reports, notices have been served to six major brands, including Red Bull, Sting, Monster Energy, Hell Energy, PepsiCo’s Adrenaline Rush, and Reliance Consumer Products’ Campa Energy Drink Gold Boost.

The food safety regulator said the companies had used branding and promotional claims that are not permitted under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It expressed concern that such advertisements could mislead consumers about the products’ benefits.

The notices also raise questions about whether the beverages meet the regulatory definition of an energy drink and highlight concerns over potential side effects associated with their consumption.

The companies are expected to respond to the notices as part of the regulatory process. FSSAI has not announced any penalties at this stage.
