Better digestion starts with your diet: 5 foods to try

Constipation is a common digestive problem that can cause discomfort, bloating, gas and a feeling of heaviness. Making simple dietary changes, including increasing fiber intake and drinking enough water, can help support regular bowel movements for many people.

A healthy digestive system also plays an important role in overall well-being. Poor digestion and constipation can leave people feeling uncomfortable and sluggish. However, symptoms such as persistent bloating, fatigue or skin changes can have many possible causes and should not automatically be attributed to constipation.

Nutrition experts generally recommend a diet that contains adequate fiber, fluids and a variety of whole foods. Some foods are particularly useful for supporting digestive health.

Here are five foods that can be included as part of a balanced diet.

Raw papaya

Raw papaya contains dietary fiber and papain, a naturally occurring enzyme associated with protein digestion. Including papaya as part of a balanced diet can contribute to overall digestive health.

Its fiber content can also help support regular bowel movements. However, papaya should be considered part of an overall fiber-rich diet rather than a standalone treatment for constipation.

Soaked raisins

Raisins provide dietary fiber and naturally occurring sorbitol. Sorbitol can draw water into the intestines and may help soften stools, making bowel movements easier for some people.

Soaking raisins before eating them is a common dietary practice, although the key digestive benefits come from the nutrients and fiber in the fruit itself. They can be added to breakfast or eaten as a snack in moderation.

Prunes

Prunes are one of the better-known foods for constipation relief. They contain both fiber and sorbitol, which can help support bowel regularity.

The insoluble fiber in prunes adds bulk to stool, while soluble fiber can support healthy movement through the digestive tract. Their natural sorbitol content can also help draw water into the bowel.

Pears

Pears are a good source of dietary fiber and also contain sorbitol. Eating a whole pear, rather than consuming it only as juice, provides more fiber and can contribute to a balanced diet that supports regular bowel movements.

Keeping the skin on, when appropriate and after washing it thoroughly, can provide additional fiber.

Oats

Oats contain soluble fiber, particularly beta-glucan, which supports digestive health and can help contribute to softer, more regular stools when consumed with adequate fluids.

Oats can be combined with fruit, nuts or seeds to create a fiber-rich breakfast. Increasing fiber intake gradually is generally preferable, as suddenly eating large amounts can cause additional gas or bloating.

Along with these foods, drinking enough water and maintaining regular physical activity can support healthy bowel function. Fiber works best when adequate fluids are consumed.

If constipation is persistent, severe or accompanied by symptoms such as blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, severe abdominal pain or vomiting, medical advice should be sought rather than relying only on dietary changes.
