Abu Dhabi: Authorities have warned that fundraising on social media will increase in the run-up to Ramadan. Officials also said that people should not fall prey to scams when there are official arrangements for charitable activities.

Most of the messages describing the battle stories come from foreign countries. Messages are also sent with the need for places of worship, school construction, and treatment.

If the earlier method was to beg on a visitor's visa, the trend is to use a cheaper and safer online system. Authorities said the collection could be done without being checked by security officials, which has led to an increase in online begging.

The fine for begging in the UAE is one lakh dirhams. Punishment will depend on the living conditions and criminal nature of the beggars. Those who bring people into the country for begging are liable to three months imprisonment and a fine of half a lakh dirhams.

Legal adviser Dr. Yusuf al-Sharif said those who spread fake news could face up to three months in prison and a fine of 10,000 dirhams under IT Act 51. Fundraising by giving false information also falls under the purview of this Act.
