UAE to Lead Global AI Search and Rescue Committee

Abu Dhabi: The UAE Search initiative has secured a major milestone by gaining global approval to lead an artificial intelligence-focused working group under COSPAS-SARSAT, the international satellite-aided search and rescue network.

The decision, finalised during a virtual session on June 13, follows high-level meetings held in Abu Dhabi between May 27 and June 5, where the UAE National Guard Command and National Search and Rescue Centre presented an ambitious roadmap for using AI to modernise mission control operations.

The UAE’s proposal — endorsed by representatives from 45 countries and major global organisations such as the International Telecommunication Union, International Civil Aviation Organization, and International Maritime Organization — aims to harness smart data processing to handle distress signals more rapidly and precisely, boosting response times during emergencies and saving more lives.

Under its new mandate, the UAE-led committee will coordinate collaboration among COSPAS-SARSAT member states, accelerate AI tool development, and help draft global standards for integrating intelligent technologies into satellite rescue missions. The plan focuses on improving operational speed, enhancing coordination across land, sea and air, and encouraging knowledge sharing among partners.

International representatives hailed the UAE’s vision as transformative, highlighting its commitment to pushing technological boundaries in humanitarian operations. The new AI committee will begin drafting its first set of global recommendations by early 2026, further cementing the UAE’s role as a pioneer in next-generation search and rescue solutions.
