New method to treat brain cancer

The first step in cracking the code to brain tumor treatment may be to crack brain's protective shield. Most of the blood vessels in the brain are lined with nearly strong walls of densely packed cells. The blood-brain barrier shields the organ from dangerous invaders, but it also keeps many drugs from getting to the brain.

Now, using ultrasound and tiny bubbles, researchers can temporarily remove the human brain's protective covering in order to deliver a potent chemotherapy drug. The early-stage clinical trial, which was described in the Lancet Oncology on May 2, may result in brand-new therapies for people with brain cancer.
