A member of the Colombian military's special forces claims that the consumption of cassava flour contributed to the survival of four children who were discovered alive in the Amazon rainforest more than a month after their plane had crashed. According to spokesperson Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez Suárez, the kids consumed "three kilograms  of farina," a coarse cassava flour that is frequently consumed by native tribes in the Amazon region.

Their indigenous origins gave them some immunity to diseases found in the jungle, and their familiarity with it—knowing what to eat and what not to eat—along with their ability to locate water—kept them alive.
