10,000 emperor penguins killed in Antarctica in ice break up

Nearly 10,000 emperor penguin chicks have been killed in the Antarctica. The sea ice underneath the young birds melted and broke apart, preventing them from developing the waterproof feathers they need to swim in the sea. The birds are believed to have drowned or frozen to death. The event occurred at the end of 2022.
