Meta to Pour Billions into Giant AI Data Centres Across the US

Washington, D.C.: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced an unprecedented investment in building massive AI data centres across the United States, underscoring the tech giant’s ambition to lead the development of artificial superintelligence.

The first site, a multi-gigawatt facility named Prometheus, will be built in New Albany, Ohio, and is expected to become operational by 2026. A second centre, Hyperion, will be located in Louisiana and could expand to five gigawatts of computing capacity by 2030, supporting Meta’s long-term AI goals.

Zuckerberg revealed that Meta plans to build “multiple more titan clusters,” noting that each site will cover vast footprints. “Just one of these covers a significant part of the footprint of Manhattan,” he said, referring to a planned cluster spanning nearly 59 square kilometres — about the size of Manhattan itself.

Meta’s choice to name its new centres after mythological figures like Prometheus and Hyperion highlights the scale and ambition of its AI vision. The move aligns with Zuckerberg’s strategy to develop superintelligent AI capable of outperforming the smartest humans, positioning Meta at the forefront of AI infrastructure globally.

While Meta’s primary income remains online advertising, which generated more than $160 billion in revenue in 2024, the company is betting big on AI to redefine its future.

Karl Freund, principal analyst at Cambrian AI Research, commented, “Clearly, Zuckerberg intends to spend his way to the top of the AI heap. The talent he is hiring will have access to some of the best AI hardware in the world.”

Following the announcement, Meta’s stock climbed 1 percent, adding to a gain of over 20 percent so far this year.

The scale of Meta’s new AI centres also brings environmental concerns to the forefront. Globally, AI data centres are extremely energy and water-intensive, with studies predicting they could consume up to 1.7 trillion gallons of water worldwide by 2027.

As Meta moves ahead with building some of the world’s most powerful AI systems, it will likely face increasing scrutiny over its environmental footprint, even as it seeks to outpace competitors in the rapidly advancing AI sector.
