Dubai Announces Final Phase of Single-Use Plastic Ban from January 1, 2026

Dubai Municipality has released detailed guidelines for the final phase of its ban on single-use plastic products, set to take effect on January 1, 2026. This phase aligns with the UAE-wide enforcement of Cabinet Resolution No. (380) of 2022 and marks the full implementation of Executive Council Resolution No. (124) of 2023, which was approved by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The move is part of Dubai’s strategy to reduce plastic waste, promote sustainability, and support the circular economy.

The final phase will prohibit a wide range of single-use plastic items, including plastic plates, cutlery, beverage cups, lids, and chopsticks. It also extends the existing bans on polystyrene cups, plates, containers, plastic stirrers, cotton buds, table covers, and straws that were already enforced in 2025. To ensure a smooth transition, Dubai Municipality has published a comprehensive awareness guide to help businesses and consumers identify and switch to approved sustainable alternatives.

Dubai’s phased approach began in 2024 with a ban on single-use plastic bags, followed by an extension to all single-use bags in June 2024. The third phase, effective January 2025, targeted additional products like Styrofoam containers, plastic straws, cotton swabs, and stirrers. Each stage has been designed to gradually shift consumer behavior and encourage the adoption of reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable materials.

Through partnerships with public and private sectors, Dubai Municipality is promoting sustainable consumption and responsible practices to reduce plastic reliance. The initiative supports Dubai’s vision to become a global leader in environmental innovation, protect natural resources, and enhance quality of life for future generations. Businesses and residents are urged to prepare for the 2026 deadline by embracing eco-friendly alternatives and integrating sustainable habits into daily operations.
