Kuwait Ministry of Interior Begins Random Drug Testing of Personnel, Starting with Police Sports Federation

Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior has commenced random drug testing among its personnel, starting with members of the Police Sports Federation, as part of a broader plan to enforce job discipline and promote a drug-free security sector. The inspections are being carried out by the General Department of Criminal Evidence in line with Law No. 159 of 2025, which regulates narcotics and psychotropic substances. The move underscores the ministry’s commitment to applying the law uniformly and setting a leadership example.

The first phase of testing was led by Brigadier General (Navy) Sheikh Mubarak Ali Yousef Al-Sabah, Chairman of the Police Sports Federation, alongside his deputies and board members. By subjecting federation members—including leadership—to screening, authorities aim to reinforce accountability and transparency at all levels. The ministry stated that the inspections are part of a scheduled plan covering various sectors and will include periodic, random, and promotion-related testing.

Under the new framework, drug screenings will also be mandatory during promotions, appointments to supervisory roles, and internal investigations. The ministry emphasized that these measures are intended to enhance readiness, maintain a safe work environment, and eliminate any practices that could compromise security integrity or public trust.

The rollout follows Kuwait’s recent enforcement of stringent anti-drug policies, including mandatory testing for government job applicants and employees in other high-risk sectors. By extending random checks to interior ministry personnel, Kuwait aims to strengthen institutional discipline and ensure that security forces remain exemplars of compliance and professionalism in the nation’s fight against substance abuse.
