Kuwait Considers Waste Fees for Private and Commercial Sectors

A proposal by Municipal Council member Alia Al-Farsi seeks to introduce fees on private and commercial entities for waste management services, based on the “polluter-pays” principle. The plan would require businesses to cover costs related to waste disposal, treatment, land reclamation, and environmental remediation, while explicitly excluding residential households.

The proposal calls for a technical and legal study to set a per-ton fee and implement tracking systems for waste collection vehicles. Its stated goals are to encourage waste sorting, boost recycling, improve Kuwait’s waste management system, and fund land rehabilitation and local recycling initiatives amid rising environmental challenges.
