Saudi warns of strict penalties for illegal food operations during Hajj

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have issued a strong warning against unauthorized food production and storage during the Hajj season. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority stated that violators could face up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to 10 million Saudi riyals.

Officials emphasized that ensuring the safety of food and medicines for pilgrims is a top priority, and strict enforcement measures will be applied without exception. All food production facilities and warehouses must comply fully with national food safety regulations.

The authority also warned against storing food products outside licensed premises and said that businesses shut down for violations can only resume operations after meeting all regulatory requirements and receiving official approval. The sale of products that do not meet approved standards is strictly prohibited.

Penalties for violations include heavy fines, imprisonment, temporary bans on operating in the food sector for up to 180 days, and suspension or cancellation of business licenses.

The SFDA is working closely with various government entities to ensure high safety standards during Hajj and urged the public to report violations through its toll-free number.
