A tanker carrying US-produced crude oil has completed a significant delivery to Japan, marking a notable shift in global energy trade patterns. The vessel transported around 910,000 barrels of crude from Texas to Tokyo Bay after a 35-day journey via the Panama Canal.
The shipment, carried by the tanker M/V Otis, is among the largest direct US crude deliveries to Japan in recent years. The oil will be processed at Cosmo Oil’s refinery in Chiba to produce fuel and other petroleum products.
The move reflects Japan’s efforts to diversify its energy sources, as it traditionally relies heavily on Middle Eastern oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz. Ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions in that region have prompted buyers to explore alternative supply routes.
Analysts say such long-distance shipments highlight changing global trade flows, even as higher transport costs and congestion at key routes like the Panama Canal present new logistical challenges.
