Kuwait plans major public transport upgrade with smart travel systems

Kuwait is preparing to modernise its public transportation system through a wide ranging reform plan aimed at reducing traffic congestion and providing affordable, efficient travel for residents and expatriates.

As part of the initiative, authorities plan to scientifically reorganise existing bus routes and introduce additional services in high demand areas to improve connectivity and reduce waiting times for passengers.

Officials also aim to modernise bus stops across the country by adding improved facilities, including air conditioned waiting areas to enhance commuter comfort, especially during extreme summer temperatures.

The government is additionally working to strengthen digital ticketing systems by expanding the use of smart cards and mobile applications, allowing passengers to access transport services through more advanced and convenient technology.

Authorities are also planning to increase private sector participation in the transport sector as part of efforts to improve service quality, operational efficiency and long term sustainability.

Officials believe the reforms will help reduce the number of private vehicles on roads, ease traffic congestion and contribute to lowering environmental pollution levels across the country.

Sources said practical steps related to the project are expected to begin in the coming months, with the reforms likely to benefit both Kuwaiti citizens and the large expatriate population.

The planned transformation is being viewed as a major step toward building a smarter, more modern and environmentally friendly transportation network in Kuwait.
