Gujarat is set to launch the first phase of Census 2027 with a digital first approach, introducing online self enumeration for citizens before door to door data collection begins.
According to officials, the exercise was initially planned for April but was rescheduled due to local body elections in the state.
Director of Census Operations Sujal Mayatra confirmed that citizens will be able to submit their census information independently through the official self enumeration portal.
Under the revised schedule, residents can complete online self enumeration between May 17 and May 31 through the official census website.
The second stage of the first phase will take place from June 1 to June 30, during which field enumerators will conduct House Listing Operations across 34 districts and 17 municipal corporations in Gujarat.
Officials described the initiative as a major step towards digital governance and modernised data collection compared to previous census exercises conducted manually.
The Census 2027 process will be carried out in two major phases. The first phase, known as House Listing Operations, will focus on housing conditions, amenities and household assets.
The second phase, scheduled for February 2027, will involve detailed population enumeration and collection of demographic information.
Authorities said more than 1.10 lakh personnel have been deployed for the massive exercise, with each enumerator expected to cover around 700 to 800 individuals within a 30 day period.
During the House Listing Operations, field staff will use a dedicated mobile application to collect responses to 33 questions covering topics including housing materials, fuel usage, amenities and other household details.
Officials believe the digital approach will improve accuracy, reduce paperwork and speed up census processing while making participation easier for citizens.
The census remains one of the largest administrative exercises in India and plays a crucial role in planning welfare schemes, infrastructure development and public policy decisions.
