Planning a Vietnam trip? Why getting a visa may still be the safer choice

Vietnam is becoming an increasingly popular destination among Indian tourists, but officials are urging travellers to carefully understand the rules surrounding visa free entry to Phu Quoc.

The Embassy of India in Vietnam has issued a travel advisory warning that many travellers may face complications if they rely solely on the visa free policy for Phu Quoc Island.

Under current regulations, Indian citizens can visit Phu Quoc without a visa only if they arrive directly on an international flight to the island and remain there throughout their stay.

Authorities clarified that entering mainland Vietnam at any stage, including transit through cities such as Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, automatically cancels the visa free eligibility.

Officials noted that many Indian travellers are unaware of these conditions because most flight routes from India to Phu Quoc usually involve stopovers in mainland Vietnam.

Without a valid visa, passengers could face travel disruptions or even boarding denials before departure.

The advisory further explained that travellers entering under the visa free arrangement are restricted to Phu Quoc Island and are not permitted to travel to other Vietnamese cities or depart the country from another location.

To avoid complications, authorities strongly recommended that Indian travellers apply for a Vietnam e visa before travelling.

Officials said obtaining an e visa offers greater flexibility, smoother travel arrangements and easier movement across different regions of Vietnam.

Despite the advisory, Phu Quoc continues attracting large numbers of international visitors because of its beaches, natural beauty and relatively affordable travel options.

Travel authorities emphasised that understanding visa and entry requirements in advance remains essential for a hassle free and enjoyable trip.
