Kerala on High Alert as IMD Issues Red Warning for Heavy Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major weather warning for Kerala, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall across several districts over the next five days and cautioning against the risk of flash floods, landslides and severe waterlogging.

A red alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on June 6, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours. On June 7, the red alert will remain in effect for Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

Several districts, including Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod, are under orange alert on different days, warning of very heavy rainfall ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. Yellow alerts have also been issued across many southern and central districts, indicating heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Weather experts have warned that intense rainfall may occur within short periods, significantly increasing the chances of urban flooding, overflowing rivers, landslides in hilly regions and widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Authorities have advised residents living in landslide-prone and flood-prone locations to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by local disaster management agencies. People have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.

Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions, while emergency response teams remain on standby to address any weather-related incidents across the state.

With the southwest monsoon strengthening over Kerala, officials are closely monitoring the situation and have urged the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and alerts.
