Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has officially launched the Priyadarshini Scheme, providing free travel for women and transgender persons on ordinary buses operated by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation across the state.
The programme was inaugurated by Chief Minister V D Satheesan at the Thampanoor Bus Terminal on Monday. Similar inauguration events are also being organised at KSRTC depots throughout Kerala.
Under the scheme, the fare exemption applies only from the date of the official launch and covers all 3,125 ordinary KSRTC buses operating statewide. To help passengers identify eligible buses, special “Priyadarshini” stickers have been placed on the vehicles.
Authorities clarified that passengers do not need to carry any identity card or additional documentation to avail themselves of the free travel benefit.
The initiative is expected to improve mobility, support women’s empowerment and make public transport more accessible for thousands of daily commuters across Kerala.
