The Board of Control for Cricket in India has named Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20 captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
Iyer replaces Suryakumar Yadav, who has been left out of the squad despite leading India to T20 World Cup success. The decision comes after a series of underwhelming performances with the bat.
The biggest talking point of the squad announcement is the inclusion of 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The youngster is set to become the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket, surpassing the record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar.
Kerala wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has also been included in the squad following his contributions to India’s recent T20 World Cup triumph. He will share wicketkeeping duties with Ishan Kishan.
Meanwhile, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the T20 series against Ireland and England as part of workload management but remains part of the Asian Games squad.
Tilak Varma has been appointed vice-captain. India will play two T20Is in Ireland on June 26 and 28 before heading to England for a five-match T20I series from July 1 to July 11.
The Asian Games cricket competition will be held in Japan from September 17 to October 3, with India aiming to continue its recent success in international T20 cricket.
