The United States Central Command announced that US forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones heading toward the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on Friday.
According to CENTCOM, the drones posed an immediate threat to maritime traffic in the region. In response, US forces carried out strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites located in Goruk and on Qeshm Island.
The US military described the actions as defensive measures aimed at protecting international shipping lanes and preventing further threats to regional security. Officials stated that American forces remain prepared to respond to any hostile actions in self-defence.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran despite a fragile ceasefire that has repeatedly faced challenges in recent weeks.
CENTCOM also rejected Iranian claims that warning shots had been fired at US warships, calling the allegations false and warning that such actions would violate existing ceasefire understandings.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, with a significant portion of global oil exports passing through the narrow waterway each day. Any disruption to maritime traffic in the area can have major implications for international energy markets.
While no casualties were reported following Friday’s operations, the latest confrontation highlights continuing instability in the Gulf region as diplomatic and military efforts to reduce tensions continue.
