Many people believe yoga practitioners should follow a strictly vegetarian diet, but experts say the focus should be on proper digestion, timing and balanced nutrition rather than whether food is vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
According to yoga experts, practising yoga on a full stomach should be avoided because many postures compress and stretch the abdominal area, making digestion more difficult. It is generally recommended to wait about four hours after a full meal before beginning a yoga session to allow food to digest properly.
If needed, a small amount of water or a cup of milk can be consumed around 10 minutes before practice, while sugary drinks and carbonated beverages are best avoided.
After completing a yoga session, practitioners are advised to wait 15 minutes before having a light snack and around 30 minutes before eating a regular meal, allowing the body time to recover.
Experts also note that non-vegetarian food is not prohibited for yoga practitioners. Instead, dietary choices should depend on an individual’s nutritional needs, physical activity and overall health. People with higher energy demands may include non-vegetarian foods as part of a balanced diet, while others may prefer vegetarian meals.
Ultimately, maintaining a healthy, balanced diet and eating at the right time is considered more important than following a specific vegetarian or non-vegetarian eating pattern.
