Washington: Donald Trump has called on petrol retailers across the United States to reduce fuel prices immediately, warning that businesses could face “big problems” if they continue charging what he described as excessive prices.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said gasoline prices should be falling sharply and accused some retailers of “gouging” customers despite changing market conditions. He also announced that he had instructed the United States Department of Justice to investigate possible cases of illegal price gouging.
The president’s comments come amid growing criticism over the economic impact of the recent conflict with Iran, which contributed to volatility in global energy markets and concerns over fuel costs for American consumers.
Trump has repeatedly argued that fuel prices would decline significantly following the end of hostilities with Iran. However, many economists have questioned that outlook, warning that the conflict could have longer-term effects on global energy prices and the broader economy.
The issue of fuel prices is expected to remain a key political and economic concern as the United States approaches the upcoming midterm elections.
