India’s ‘Haunted Beach’: Why Gujarat’s Dumas Beach Is Shrouded in Mystery

Dumas Beach, located around 20km from Surat, is known not only for its coastal beauty but also for eerie stories that have earned it a reputation as one of India’s so-called haunted beaches. Calm and scenic during the daytime, the beach has long been associated with mysterious tales about unexplained experiences after dark.

One of Dumas Beach’s most distinctive features is its dark-coloured sand. Local folklore claims the area was once used as a burial or cremation ground, and stories about spirits have been passed down over the years. Some visitors claim to have heard unusual sounds or felt as though they were being watched or followed at night. Such accounts, however, remain part of local folklore, with no scientific evidence establishing paranormal activity at the beach.

Despite its spooky reputation, Dumas Beach continues to attract visitors for its distinctive landscape, sea views and local food. Natural minerals are believed to contribute to the dark appearance of its sand, while winds, waves and other natural coastal sounds could explain some of the noises associated with the area. Whether visitors come for the scenery or its mysterious legends, Dumas Beach remains an intriguing destination near Surat.
