Hyundai is recalling 5,360 2026 Ioniq 9 electric SUVs in the United States over a potential safety defect involving the second-row power-folding seats.
According to the automaker, the second-row seats may fail to properly detect an occupant during certain power-folding or stowing functions. As a result, the seats could continue moving after coming into contact with a passenger, increasing the risk of entrapment.
The recall covers select 2026 Ioniq 9 vehicles in the Limited, Calligraphy and Calligraphy Design trims, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Hyundai said the issue was traced to a fault in the second-row seats’ anti-pinch system following a three-month investigation. The review was initiated after the company received five customer complaints, including two reports involving minor injuries.
To address the problem, Hyundai is introducing an over-the-air software update that modifies the seat-control logic governing occupant detection and anti-pinch functionality.
Dealers will inspect affected vehicles and install the updated Seat Controller software at no cost to owners. Customers enrolled in Hyundai’s Bluelink service may also be able to receive the software update remotely.
Until the update is completed, Hyundai is advising owners to use the second-row power seats with caution. The automaker has also recommended keeping children away from the rear seats while the power-folding function is being operated.
The recall is the third involving the Ioniq 9 in the United States this year. Previous recalls involved issues associated with the high-voltage battery bus bar and rear suspension fasteners.
Owners of affected vehicles should follow Hyundai’s recall instructions and complete the software update as soon as it becomes available.
