The Kuwait National Seismic Network has detected more than 1,400 local earthquakes—ranging from weak to moderate since its establishment in 1997, according to Dr. Faisal Al-Humaidan, Director of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). The network, comprising nine field stations and a central analysis unit, also continuously monitors regional and global seismic activity.
Dr. Al-Humaidan highlighted KISR’s broader research achievements, including a #2 regional ranking in the SCIMAGO 2024 index. Key projects span earthquake monitoring, environmental resilience, renewable energy, water security, and food safety. The institute completed 175 research projects in 2024-2025, with a majority commissioned by national entities, though budget constraints and approval delays have posed operational challenges.
