The Kuwait Society for Earth Sciences has warned of hazardous sinkholes forming in the desert regions of Jal Al-Zour and Al-Mutla, urging the public to avoid visiting these areas. Experts say the pits, whether natural or man-made, could collapse at any time and pose serious risks to visitors.
According to a study led by society head Dr. Mubarak Al-Hajri, large cracks and cave-like holes have been found along rainwater channels in the Had Safa area of Jal Al-Zour. The soil and rock formations in these regions are weak, and existing fractures—especially those extending northeast—may widen over time and lead to sudden collapses.
Authorities cautioned that the sinkholes may be deeper and wider than they appear on the surface, making it dangerous to approach them. Visitors heading to the desert for camping or recreation have been urged to exercise extreme caution in Jal Al-Zour and Al-Mutla and to report any visible cracks or ground collapses to authorities immediately.
